Cog-Dog Radio podcast, Behavioral Wellness for Pet Dogs
Sarah Stremming of The Cognitive Canine, LLC interviewing me was a game changer. I have spent the better part of my adult life advocating for emotionally healthy pets for their people and for our community at large. To have my work recognized by Sarah who is, in my opinion, the pioneer of behavioral wellness in sport dogs, was a true achievement for me.

Enrichment, and Hurricane Adventures
“Absolutely. I think utilizing enrichment in a pet sitting or dog walking capacity is unique and amazing and we’re really going to get into the nitty-gritty of that a little bit later. You are in Austin, but you recently had a little hurricane adventure in Houston. Do you want to tell us a little bit about that?”
What We Do
“Yeah. Just a little a background on my business, we’re a little bit more limited in our service area because we’re mainly in the suburbs. We were actually just talking about this before we got on this call. We are surrounded by houses, so we don’t have those beautiful beaches and mountains that you guys have. It is flat and it is populated and it is also easily over a hundred degrees for sometimes four to five months at a time. That really limits some of the stuff we can do with our dogs because it’s just too hot. When we walking exercising it’s either on a leash, it’s on sidewalks, it’s in the backyards. Hopefully, during hot days it’s only in the cooler hours. We typically use enrichment during our dog walks, let outs and also our sitting visits. Since I’m not the dog’s owner, the owners aren’t present, I’m the one providing the enrichment activities versus them doing it. Some of your listeners might be the ones providing the enrichment, but we’re a little different because we’re the ones doing it.”
“So, he has some severe reactivity issues and you’ve seen a huge change in him just by, A. Allowing him to choose whether he wants to go on a walk at all; and then B. Letting him, I love how you put it, choose is own adventure, on the walk? You’re literally just walking in suburbia, but you are doing, I like this term, enrichment walks. So, you are basically taking my decompression walk idea and putting it into a suburban setting and you’ve seen a huge change in this dog’s behavior?”
“Yes. I mean it’s night and day. People will now stop us and ask us if that’s the same dog.”
Being Smelly Isn’t So Bad
“Yeah, we are literally the smelliest people. We smell like stinky dogs and stinky treats.”
“She smells great. She’s covered in slobber and hair and smells like tuna. Really good. You guys are both already married, so you know. It’s all good. But it’s just taking that little extra planning step I think is what a lot of the pet owners miss and then they don’t necessarily understand why maybe the dog walker doesn’t have the same problems that they might be having.”
The Pets Crave Love Mission
“Just imagine how these pet dogs would be so much better in our sport dog world and how much safer your own dogs would be being around these dogs that are feeling emotionally happy. As someone who came from dog sports and went back to just being a pet owner, I really always take the opportunity to educate people in other ways that we can help dogs that are just barking at the window all day or just going nuts on a leash because I need to walk those dogs around those dogs. So, the more enriched they are, they better it is for my dogs.”
